Samhain: Honoring the Past, Welcoming the New Year

Samhain marks a powerful turning point in the Wheel of the Year—it's not just the end of the harvest, but the beginning of the darker half of the year. For me, this Sabbat feels like a sacred invitation to pause, reflect, and honor those who have come before us, while also welcoming the new cycle ahead. It’s a time of deep connection with both the spiritual realm and the earth.

The History & Significance of Samhain

Samhain (pronounced SOW-in) has its roots in ancient Celtic traditions, where it marked the end of the harvest and the onset of winter. The veil between the physical and spiritual worlds was believed to be thinnest at this time, making it easier to communicate with ancestors and spirit guides.

Many of the customs we associate with Halloween—such as carving pumpkins (originally turnips) and dressing up—stem from Samhain celebrations. People would light bonfires to protect against spirits, and the night was filled with both reverence and a bit of playful mischief.

In modern times, Samhain is celebrated as the Witches' New Year, a time to honor endings and new beginnings. It’s a time of reflection, deepening intuition, and connecting with the spirit world.

How I Celebrate Samhain

🕯️ Ancestor Altar & Rituals – One of my most sacred traditions for Samhain is honoring my ancestor altar, which I keep set up year-round in our living room bookcase. It’s a beautiful and peaceful space where I’ve placed photos of loved ones who have passed, along with offerings of flowers, honey, and apples. At Samhain, I light candles for them and sit quietly in reflection, inviting their wisdom and presence. This space is my place of connection with the past, and during this time, I feel their energy especially close.

💀 Ancestor Reflection Ritual – Rather than writing letters, I take this time for quiet reflection. I close my eyes, breathe deeply, and tune in to the energy of my ancestors. I often feel their presence in subtle ways, and I welcome their guidance for the year ahead. I may also light a candle for each ancestor I wish to honor, offering gratitude for the wisdom they’ve passed down through the generations.

🍂 Baking to Honor My Ancestors – One of my favorite ways to connect with my family’s history is by baking or cooking recipes handed down through the generations. It’s a powerful act of honoring them, and the kitchen becomes a sacred space filled with love, tradition, and gratitude. Whether it’s a dish I remember my grandmother making or one passed down from even earlier generations, I take joy in infusing those recipes with my intention to honor the past and keep their memories alive in my daily life.

🔥 Bonfire & Sipping Hot Cider – The bonfire in our backyard is always a highlight of Samhain. We drum, dance, and tell stories, welcoming the dark, honoring the ancestors, and basking in the warmth of the fire. It’s a celebration of both life and death, of change and transformation.

🛁 Samhain Bath Ritual – I prepare a healing bath with rose petals, sage, and a pinch of black salt. It’s a sacred time to release old energy and welcome in clarity for the new year ahead. (You can find my Samhain bath ritual in the shop!)

🎃 Carving Pumpkins & Celebrating Life – We love carving pumpkins together as a family. The glowing pumpkins symbolize the welcoming of spirits and honoring the natural cycle of life. I always make a wish as I carve, aligning with the energy of the season’s transition.

Bringing Samhain Into Everyday Life

Even if you don’t celebrate Samhain in the traditional sense, its energy is one of reflection, remembrance, and renewal. It’s about honoring the cycles of life, embracing the coming darkness, and looking ahead with clarity.

This is the perfect time to:
Reflect on your past year and release what no longer serves you.
Honor your ancestors or loved ones who have passed.
Set intentions for the new year ahead, asking for guidance and clarity.
Take time for quiet and solitude, embracing the darkness of the season as a time of inner growth.
