Yule: Celebrating the Return of the Light

Yule, the Winter Solstice, is a truly magical time of year. It’s when the longest night of the year gives way to the rebirth of the sun, marking the return of light and the promise of new beginnings. For me, Yule is a time to embrace the beauty of nature’s cycles, honor the darkness, and celebrate the light’s return. It’s a quiet, peaceful time filled with warmth, reflection, and gratitude.

The History & Significance of Yule

Yule, like many of the Sabbats, has ancient roots in Celtic and Nordic traditions. The Winter Solstice marks the rebirth of the sun, as the days slowly begin to grow longer again after the darkness of winter. Yule was traditionally celebrated with feasts, bonfires, and the lighting of candles, all to honor the return of warmth and light.

Over time, many of the modern holiday traditions we know today—such as decorating Christmas trees and giving gifts—were influenced by Yule customs. The Yule log, often a large piece of wood burned in the hearth, symbolizes the return of the sun and the warmth it brings to the earth.

How I Celebrate Yule

Looking at Lights – One of my favorite Yule traditions is simply looking at lights. Whether it’s the twinkling of holiday lights on trees, or the soft glow of candles around the home, lights bring a sense of peace and hope during the darkest time of the year. We love going for walks in our neighborhood to see the decorated houses and bask in the brightness. I always find it a grounding ritual to take in the beauty of the lights, feeling as though I’m connecting with the return of the sun through the warm, glimmering glow.

🍪 Baking Family Cookie Recipes – The heart of our Yule celebration is centered around family baking traditions. Every year, we bake a batch of my family’s special recipes—walnut crescents and peanut butter balls. These recipes were passed down by my ancestors and have become a symbol of love and connection in our home. The scent of these cookies baking fills the house with warmth and reminds me of the generations of women who have baked in the kitchen before me.

When I bake these cookies, I feel like I’m honoring my family’s traditions while creating new memories with my loved ones. It’s a time to slow down, enjoy the process, and infuse every batch with gratitude for the people and blessings in my life.

🕯️ Candles & Yule Altar – On Yule night, I set up a Yule altar with white candles and evergreens. I place a sun symbol at the center to honor the return of light, and I always include nature-inspired decorations like holly or mistletoe. I take time during the evening to meditate and reflect on the past year, honoring the darkness that has allowed me to rest, recharge, and renew, while also celebrating the hope and renewal that comes with the return of light.

🔥 Yule Log Bonfire – If the weather permits, we enjoy a small Yule bonfire in our backyard. We sit around the fire, share stories, and celebrate the return of warmth. It’s a reminder that even in the coldest of times, the sun will return, and with it, our hopes and dreams for the new year.

Bringing Yule Into Everyday Life

Yule is about honoring the return of the light, embracing hope, and celebrating new beginnings. Even outside of the ritual celebrations, it’s a time to align with the energy of renewal and inner warmth.

This is the perfect time to:
Reflect on your year—what has served you, what needs to be released?
Honor your ancestors through food, stories, or creating new traditions.
Make space for the return of light, both physically (through candles and lights) and spiritually.
Practice gratitude for the gifts you’ve received this year and the hope of the year ahead.
